How to Avoid Back Pain when Sitting at your Desk and Writing. (And why I use a Kneeling Chair...)

When you write for a living, you find yourself sitting in front of a computer for many hours each day.


In all kinds of ways, this is not a healthy way to spend the day. It’s tough on the back and certainly doesn’t help when it comes to posture and fitness.


Basically, sitting down and working for a living is not going to help you stay fit and healthy.


Find a balance and keep your back strong


If you are going to spend hours a day writing, you need to exercise a little. At the very least you should get up from your desk and walking for five or ten minutes every couple of hours.


A short walk will help loosen you up and keep your back flexible. Or spend a few minutes on an exercise machine like an Elliptical Stepper.


Taking a break and walking for a while is also good for your mind, and will help you work harder and focus more completely when you sit back down.


Above all, look after your spine...


Sitting down all day is not good for your spine and even if you take some breaks and walk around a little, you need to give some thought to the kind of chair you have.


When it comes to an ergonomic work area, there are workstations, chairs, keyboards and monitor stands specially designed to look after your posture and minimize work injuries.


However, if you are going to invest in just one item, get yourself a good chair.


There are plenty of choices out there, some of them quite expensive. But there are also some more economical alternatives.


Some people spend all or part of the day working while sitting on a simple exercise ball. When you do that you’ll feel your body working to keep balance.


And that’s a good way to keep your muscles working and your back straight.


For myself, I use what is called a Kneeling Stool or Kneeling Chair. I have used it for years now and it has really helped. The thing about a kneeling chair as that it forces you to keep your back straight...which is a good thing.


If you don’t like the idea of sitting on an exercise ball or a using a kneeling chair, you can always browse sites like They list numerous styles of office chairs specifically designed to help keep your spine in good shape.

The nature of our profession is such that writers are liable to end up unfit, with bad posture and painful back problems.


But it doesn’t have to be that way.


You need to balance your day with some kind of exercise and stretching routine.


And you need to make a minimum investment in a work chair that will help keep your spine in good shape.
